CO86: determine the rate constant and order of a chemical reaction using spectrophotometer techniques.

CO87: determine the pKa value of a weak acid using spectrophotometer, and relate the pKa value to the acid's strength.

CO88: use spectrophotometer as analytical techniques to estimate the concentration of a given chemical species in a sample.

Unit I: 

Minor Experiments

  • Study the absorbance spectra of KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 (in 0.1 M H2SO4) and determine the λmax values. Calculate the energies of the two transitions indifferent units (J molecule-1, kJ mol-1, cm-1, eV).
  • Study the pH-dependence of the UV-Vis spectrum of K2Cr2O7.
  • Record the 200-350 nm UV spectra of the given compounds (acetone, acetaldehyde, 2-propanol, acetic acid) in water. Comment on the effect of structure on the UV spectra of organic compounds.
  • Analyse the given vibrational-rotational spectrum of HCl.

Major Experiments

  • Verify Lambert-Beer’s law and determine the concentration of CuSO4/KMnO4/K2Cr2O7 in a solution of unknown concentration.
  • Determine the concentrations of KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 in a mixture spectrophotometrically.
  • Study the kinetics of iodination of propanone in acidic medium.(volumetrically/spectrophotometrically)
  • Determine the amount of iron present in a sample using 1,10-phenathroline spectrophotometrically.
  • Determine the dissociation constant of an indicator phenolphthalein spectrophotometrically.
  • Study the kinetics of interaction of crystal violet/ phenolphthalein with sodium hydroxide. (volumetrically/spectrophotometrically)

The candidates shall be given two exercise out of exercises prescribed in the syllabus. The exercises in physical chemistry can be modified by the examiner and the same will be explained to the candidates. However, such modifications will not involve any departure from the basic principles over which experiments are prescribed in the syllabus.
