Chemistry Laboratory X (Practical)
|
CO107: Identify the functional groups in mono and bifunctional organic compounds by performing step-wise qualitative tests. CO108: Interpret the given spectra and identify the simple organic compounds. CO109: Synthesize some dyes and polymers. Estimate carbohydrates in given sample and extract organic molecules from natural products. CO110: Compile and report the results efficiently, and develop communications skills. CO111: Contribute effectively in course-specific interaction. |
Approach in teaching: Power point presentation, laboratory instructions and demonstrations.
Learning activities for the students: Peer learning, hands-on-learning, interpretation of data, record writing and learning through virtual labs.
|
Conduction of experiments, lab records, viva voce.

Organic Compound Detection
Qualitative analysis of unknown organic compounds containing monofunctional groups (carbohydrates, aryl halides, aromatic hydrocarbons, nitro compounds, amines and amides) and simple bifunctional groups, for e.g. salicylic acid, cinnamic acid, nitrophenols, etc.
Spectral Characterization of Organic Compounds
Identification of simple organic compounds by IR spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy (spectra to be provided).
Synthesis and Extraction
Analysis of Carbohydrate: aldoses and ketoses, reducing and non-reducing sugars.
Scheme of Examination
The duration of examination will be 5 hrs.
The following exercise will be set in the examinations
Organic Compound Detection 20 marks
Spectral Characterization (IR and NMR) 20 marks
Synthesis 15 marks
Viva 15 marks
Total 70 marks
Organic Compound Detection
This exercise carries 20 marks for the identification of one organic compound (liquid or solid); the distribution of marks will be as follows:
Physical properties: colour, state, odour 2 marks
Solubility 2 marks
Aliphatic/ Aromatic 2 marks
Element detection 3 marks
Functional group 3 marks
M.P/B.P. 2 marks
Confirmatory test 2 marks
Derivative – procedure & M.P. 2 marks
Result 2 marks
Spectral Characterization (IR and NMR)
Two spectra (one IR and one NMR) will be given to the students for characterization. Each spectra carries 10 marks.
Synthesis
This exercise carries 15 marks. 4 marks out of 15 are reserved for neat, methodical and systematic working. The exercise amongst the candidates will be allotted by lot.
The yield, purity and proper presentation of the compound shall be taken into account while awarding marks.
Viva
Oral questions shall generally be asked over the work assigned to the candidate. The purpose is to find out as to what extent the candidate has understood the basic principles.
