Chemistry Laboratory XVI (Practical) |
CO199: Work safely in a chemistry lab and know what to do in case of an accident. CO200: Apply suitable techniques to separate and identify organic compounds from the given mixture. CO201: Perform the experiments for the determination of the functional groups and samples quantitatively. CO202: Compile and report the results efficiently and develop communication skills. CO203: Contribute effectively in course-specific interaction. |
Approach in teaching: Laboratory instructions and Demonstrations.
Learning activities for the students: Peer learning, hands-on-learning, interpretation of data, record writing and learning through virtual labs
|
Conduction of experiments, lab records, viva voce and quiz |
Qualitative Analysis
Separation, purification and identification of components of a mixture of two/three organic compounds (one liquid and two solids or three solids) using TLC for checking the purity of separated compounds.
Quantitative Analysis
Demonstration Exercise
Scheme of Examination
The duration of the examination will be 6 hrs.
Qualitative Analysis 30 marks
Quantitative Analysis 25 marks
Viva 15 marks
Total 70 marks
1.Qualitative Analysis
This exercise carries 30 marks for the identification of two organic compounds. Six marks are reserved for the proper selection of separation technique, four marks for proper reporting of result and rest of the 20 marks are kept for the identification of two organic compounds (10 marks each)
1) Physical properties: colour, state, odour 1/2 mark
2) Solubility 1 mark
3) Aliphatic/Aromatic 1/2 mark
4) Element(s) detection 2 marks
5) Functional group(s), M.P./B.P. 3 marks
6) Confirmatory test 1 mark
7) Derivative- procedure & M.P. 2 marks
Out of two organic compounds, one compound will be so given that its derivative can be obtained under the prevailing conditions of the laboratory.
2.Quantitative Analysis
The exercise carries 25 marks. Distribution is as follows:
3. Viva
Oral questions shall generally be asked over the work assigned to the candidate. The purpose is to find out as to what extent the candidate has understanding the basic principles.
