Each year a couple of dozen new drugs licensed for use. The research and development journey of those new drugs that make it to market will have taken around 7-12 years. Thus to acquint students better with the drug development, this seminar was organized.
The session started with the welcome of Dr. Pooran Chand. He introduced the concept of Peramivir as it works by preventing an enzyme in the body from releasing virus from infected cells so Peramivir is used to treat influenza in adults who have had flu symptoms for up to 2 days.
He stated that it is usually given as a single dose. The medicine should be given within the first 2 days of when flu symptoms start. Peramivir will not treat an infection caused by bacteria or fungus. He also explained the side effect of Peramivir like confusion, hallucinations, unusual behavior or thoughts. Basically it is an anti viral drug developed by biocryst pharmaceuticals for the treatment of influenza. It is a neuraminidase inhibitor, acting as a transition state analogue Inhibitor of influenza neuraminidase and thereby preventing new viruses from emerging from infected cells. It is approved for intravenous administration.
He ended lecture with some little things which we have to take care during oral conception of drugs. It was greatly reaccepted by the students, research scholars and faculty members.
The students were acquainted with the development of a drug with the given example of Peramivir-BCX 1812.
