Centre for Research, Innovation and Training (CRIT) and Department of Chemistry, IIS (Deemed to be University) Jaipur has organised an Online one-day workshop on “How to write Plagiarism-Free Review Articles” on September 9, 2023 from 10.30 am to 2 pm. The workshop aimed to provide participants especially postgraduate students, research scholars and faculty members with essential knowledge and skills to produce original and ethical review articles.

Professor K S. Sharma, Director, the Centre for Research, Innovation and Training (CRIT), provided insight into the CRIT and made the students aware of its role in enhancing the quality of research. The session was taken up by two eminent resource persons, Prof. Ravi Singh, Department of Chemistry, IIT Delhi and Dr. Neetu Singh, Centre of Biomedical Engineering, IIT Delhi.

Prof. Ravi Singh, the first speaker of the event, focused on various aspects of scientific research, including methodologies, techniques, and documentation, providing valuable guidance for the audience. One of the key takeaways from his talk was the importance of selecting the most appropriate methodologies for a research project. He emphasized the need to choose methodologies carefully and to support them with data or experiments. Dr. Singh stressed the significance of validation through rigorous research and the importance of maintaining objectivity throughout the process. In addition to discussing research methodologies, Dr. Singh also touched upon the essential steps involved in writing a research report. He highlighted the significance of formulating a hypothesis, validating it using data or a thorough literature review, and continuously questioning the hypothesis by comparing it with alternative methodologies.

Dr. Singh's encouragement to the students was particularly inspiring. He reminded them not to be discouraged by negative results, emphasizing that negative results are valuable outcomes in research. Furthermore, he underscored the importance of effective communication in research. Dr. Singh advised that a manuscript should be written clearly and simply, ensuring that even someone without a specialized background can understand the findings. Overall, Dr. Ravi Singh provided a comprehensive overview of the research process, from methodology selection to effective documentation and communication. His insights will undoubtedly prove valuable to the students as they embark on their research journeys.

Dr. Neetu Singh, who conducted the second half of the session, provided the importance of avoiding plagiarism, correct citation of sources and the consequences of plagiarism in academic research. She provided valuable insights into the process of ensuring a research article is free from plagiarism. One of the key points emphasized was the significance of honesty and integrity in academic writing. She cautioned students against incorporating others' opinions or work into their own without proper acknowledgement. Acknowledging and citing sources correctly is crucial to maintain academic integrity.

Dr. Singh shared her research methodology and highlighted how plagiarism can impact research credibility. Her emphasis on the detrimental impact of plagiarism on the credibility of research underscored the importance of originality in academic work. To illustrate the consequences of plagiarism, she shared an example involving one of her students. She explained how academic institutions use software to detect plagiarism, emphasizing that it is not only unethical but can also have severe consequences for a student's academic and professional future. Practical tips for preventing plagiarism were provided, such as meticulous citation, comprehensive referencing, and a commitment to academic integrity.

In summary, Professor Neetu Singh's session provided essential guidance on writing research manuscripts with integrity and authenticity. Her emphasis on avoiding plagiarism and giving proper credit to sources aligns with the principles of ethical academic research and writing, ensuring the credibility and trustworthiness of scholarly work. The session was interactive, with participants asking questions.

The workshop was attended by 197 participants. The insightful sessions were concluded by a vote of thanks, given by Dr. Varsha Goyal, Ad. Head, Department of Chemistry. She expressed gratitude in a thoughtful way to the speakers and organizers for their contributions to the event.
