Objective: 

To apply the concepts of Chemical kinetics to homogeneous catalysis, reactions at surfaces, molecular reaction dynamics and atmospheric reactions.

Composite reactions

Kinetics of fast reactions. Oscillatory reactions. Autocatalysis. Reactions in flow systems, Flow techniques. Relaxation techniques, Flash photolysis, Shock tubes.

Mechanism of atom and radical combination reactions.

Kinetics of chain reactions: branching chain and explosion limits (H2 + O2 as an example).

Homogeneous catalysis

General catalytic mechanism: Equilibrium treatment, Steady state treatment, Activation energies for catalyzed reactions. 

Acid-Base Catalysis- Mechanism, Catalytic activity and Acid Base strength, Acidity functions.

Enzyme catalysis- Influence of substrate concentration, influence of pH, influence of temperature, transient phase kinetics.

Activation of bimolecular hydrogen.

Reactions on surfaces

Adsorption, competitive adsorption, non ideal adsorption, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics of adsorption, structures of solid surfaces and adsorbed layers, mechanism of surface reactions, unimolecular surface reactions, bimolecular surface reactions.

Molecular reaction dynamics:

Molecular dynamical calculations: The reaction of H + H2, reaction of Br + H2. Chemiluminescence, Potential energy surfaces: Selective enhancement of a reaction, Disposal of excess energy,  Gradual and sudden surfaces, Influence of rotational energy. Molecular beams, Theoritical calculations of the rate constant, Electron transfer reactions: Marcus theory.

Photochemical and Radiation-Chemical reactions

Photochemical reactions: photochemical primary process, law of photochemical equivalence, fate of the excited molecules. Photophysical kinetics of unimolecular processes, state diagrams, delayed fluorescence, effect of temperature, bimolecular collisions in gases and vapours: Mechanism of fluorescence quenching,  collisions in solutions, Kinetics of collisional quenching: Stern-Volmer equation
