On completion of this course, the students will be able to – CO74: learn the use of green chemistry principles and processes in laboratory reactions as a benign approach. CO75: compare the advantages of green procedures over conventional synthesis. CO76: assign structures to simple molecules on the basis of infra-red and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. CO77: estimate the different functional groups i.e. hydroxyl (monohydric, dihydric, trihydric and phenols) and amino by different methods. CO78: estimate the saponification value of different saturated and unsaturated oil. |

Theoretical background of Green Chemistry 6 Hrs
History, need and goal, green chemistry and sustainability and background of green chemistry.
Twelve basic principles of green chemistry with their explanation and examples
Synthesis (Green /Conventional) 30 Hrs
a) Aromatic Electrophilic Substitution
i) Acetylation – Acetylation of aniline/salicylic acid.
ii) Nitration - Preparation of 4-nitrosalicylic acid
iii) Bromination - Preparation of p-bromoacetanilide
b) Aldol Condensation:Synthesis of dibenzal propanone
c) Rearrangement: Benzil-Benzilic acid rearrangement
d) Pechmann Condensation for Coumarin synthesis: Clay catalysed solid state synthesis of 7-hydroxy -4- methyl coumarin
e) Diazotization/coupling: Preparation of methyl orange
Spectroscopy 16 Hrs
Interpretation of IR and NMR spectra of simple organic compounds (ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, methylethanoate, ethyl acetate,stilbene, ethyl acetate, propanone etc).
Quantitative Analysis 8 hrs
a) Estimation of glucose by Fehling’s /Benedict solution
b) Estimation of saponification value of the given oil.

The exercise carries 18 marks. Organic preparation will be allotted by lottery. The yield, crystallization and recording of melting point will be given due consideration while awarding marks.
The exercise carries 16 marks. Four marks shall be awarded for preparatory work, setting an apparatus, neat and methodical work. Any modifications will not involve any departure from the basic principles over which experiments are prescribed in the syllabus.
Twelve marks will be awarded for correct observation, use of correct formula, calculation and result within permissible limits.
The permissible limit will be decided by the examiner as it varies with the nature of experiment.
Viva: Oral questions shall generally be asked over the work assigned to the candidate. The purpose is to find out as to what extent the candidate has understood the basic principles of chemistry.
