A. Separation of mixtures by chromatography: Measure the Rf value in each case.

(Combination of two ions to be given)

Paper chromatographic separation of Fe3+, Al3+ and Cr3+

Paper chromatographic separation of Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+ and Zn2+

B. Preparation of any two of the following complexes and measurement of their conductivity:

  1. Tetraamminecarbonatocobalt (III) nitrate
  2. Preparation of Prussian blue Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3
  3. Preparation of cis and trans-bisoxalatodiaquachromate (III).
  4. Preparation of Bis-Dimethylglyoxime-nickel (II)

Qualitative Analysis

Separation and identification of solid binary mixture using water/NaHCO3 /NaOH and preparation of suitable derivatives.

Scheme of Examination

The duration of examination will be 4 hrs.

The following exercises will be set in the examinations

Inorganic Synthesis                                                      18 marks

Inorganic Chemistry: Chromatographic separation           10 marks

organic Chemistry: Mixture analysis                                30 marks

Viva                                                                            12 marks

      Total                                                                     70 marks

1.Inorganic Synthesis

This exercise carries 18 marks. 4 marks out of 18 are reserved for neat, methodical and systematic working. The exercise amongst the candidates will be allotted by lot.

The yield, purity and conductance of the compound shall be taken into account while awarding marks.

2. Chromatographic Techniques

One chromatographic separation of 10 marks will be given. The distribution of marks is as follows:

·        Theory and procedure                                                   2 marks

·        Preparation of solutions                                                 3 marks

·        Observation                                                                  3 marks

·        Result                                                                           2 marks

3.Organic Mixture analysis

The exercise carries 30 marks for the identification of two organic compounds; 4 marks are reserved for the proper selection technique, rest of the 26 marks are kept for the identification of two organic compounds (13 marks each)

·        Physical properties: colour, state, odour              1 mark

·        Solubility                                                          1 mark
