Laboratory Safety measures 8 Hrs Handling of hazardous chemicals, incompatible chemicals, flammable solvents, fire hazards in chemical laboratory, control of fire, fire extinguishers, toxicity of chemicals, forms of toxic materials, personal protective equipment, health effects and first aid, MSDS (material safety data sheet), use of compressed gases, waste minimization strategies and chemical waste disposal, procedures for neutralization of strong acids and strong bases.
Theoretical aspects- classification and primary requirements of titrations.
Acid-base titrations- basic principle, neutralisation indicators – types, theories of indicators, choice of indicators, titration curves and applications.
Redox titrations- principle, indicators, and applications of permangnatometry, dichromatometry, iodometry titrations.
Complexometric titration- reactions and properties of EDTA, types of EDTA titrations, selectivity (masking and demasking) in complexometry, metal ion indicators and applications.Precipitation titration- principle, types of titrations (Mohr’s, Volhard’s, Fajan’s), indicators and applications.
Inorganic Chemistry Experiments
Calibration of fractional weights, pipettes and burettes, preparation of standard solutions, dilution – 0.1 M to 0.001 M solutions, buffer solutions.
Acid-base titration
i. Determination of strength of sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide in a mixture using phenolphthalein and methyl red indicator.
ii. Determination of acetic acid in commercial vinegar using NaOH.
Redox Titration
i. To estimate volumetrically the strength of given FAS solution by using standard solution of KMnO4
ii. Determination of strength of CuSO4 solution using sodium thiosulphate.
iii. Estimation of ferrous and ferric ion by dichromate method.
Complexometric titration
. Estimation of hardness of water by EDTA (Temporary and Permanent).
Kinetics
First order kinetics- Hydrolysis of methyl acetate catalyzed by HCl.
Second order kinetics- Saponification of ethyl acetate (initial concentration of both the reactants are same).
Adsorption
To study the adsorption of a solute (acetic acid) on a dispersed solid (activated charcoal).

The exercise carries 20 marks. The distribution of marks will be as follows:
Four marks will be reserved for the preparation of solutions, neat methodical and systematic working of the candidate.
The remaining 16 marks will be distributed as follows:

Physical Chemistry Experiment:
The exercise carries 28 marks.
Six marks shall be awarded for preparatory work, setting up of an apparatus, neat and methodical work.
Twenty two marks will be awarded for correct observation, use of correct formula, calculation and result within permissible limits
The exercise carries 20 marks. The distribution of marks will be as follows:
Four marks will be reserved for the preparation of solutions, neat methodical and systematic working of the candidate.
The remaining 16 marks will be distributed as follows:
The permissible limit will be decided by the examiner as it varies with the nature of the experiment.
Viva:
Oral questions shall generally be asked over the work assigned to the candidate. The purpose is to find out as to what extent the candidate has understood the basic principles of chemistry.
