This course will enable the students to-
get acquainted with various safety measures including handling of chemicals, safe disposal of chemical wastes etc., understand the concept of separation of mixtures containing metal ions, insoluble and interfering radicals and learn about the quantitative estimation of different ions volumetrically.

Inorganic Chemistry LAB I (Practical) |
CO37:Apply the knowledge of lab safety measures during the experimental work. CO38: Analyze and detect ions, rare elements and other pollutants in the samples of daily use (vegetables, food, water etc.). CO39: Estimate the concentrations of different ions volumetrically. CO40: Compile and report the results efficiently and develop communication skills. CO41: Contribute effectively in course-specific interaction. |
Approach in teaching: Laboratory instructions and Demonstrations.
Learning activities for the students: Peer learning, hands-on-learning, interpretation of data, record writing and learning through virtual labs. |

Laboratory Safety measures
Safe working procedure and protective environment, protective apparel, emergency procedure and first aid, safe storage and use of hazardous chemicals. Procedure for working with gases above or below atmospheric pressure, safe storage and disposal of waste chemicals, recovery, recycling and reuse of laboratory chemicals, neutralization of strong acids and strong bases, procedure for laboratory disposal of explosives.
MSDS, identification, verification and segregation of laboratory waste, disposal of waste in sanitary sewer system, incineration and transportation of hazardous chemicals. Flammable solvents, fire hazards in chemical laboratory.
Qualitative Mixture Analysis
Analysis of mixture for eight radicals (cations and anions) including
Quantitative Analysis: Volumetric Analysis (any three)
Scheme of Examination
The duration of the examination will be 6 hrs.
The following exercises will be set in the examination
Lab Safety Quiz 10 marks
Qualitative Mixture Analysis 32 marks
Volumetric Analysis 13 marks
Viva 15 marks
Total 70 marks
1.Qualitative Mixture Analysis
The exercise carries 32 marks. Not more than one interfering radical, rare metal as anion and an insoluble will be given in a mixture of eight radicals.
1 mark shall be awarded for each radical correctly reported and properly recorded. 1 mark will be awarded for each correct radical if only dry test or preliminary tests are given. 1 mark may be awarded to a candidate if she has approached in systematic and correct manner towards the analysis upto a group in analysis of basic radical or correct indicative test of acid radical. Remaining 1 mark is reserved for confirmatory test of radical.
2.Volumetric Exercise
The exercise carries 13 marks. The distribution of marks will be as follows:
5 marks will be reserved for the preparation of solutions, neat methodical and systematic working of the candidates.
The remaining 8 marks will be distributed as follows:
% Error Marks awarded
<1.0 8
3.Viva
Oral questions shall generally be asked over the work assigned to the candidate. The purpose is to find out as to what extent the candidate has understanding the basic principles of chemistry.
