Unit I:

Inorganic synthesis                                                                                  20 hrs

a) Preparation of Bis-Dimethylglyoxime-nickel (II)

b) Preparation of Sodiumtrioxalatoferrate (III)

c) Preparation of cis and trans-bisoxalatodiaquachromate (II)

d) Preparation of Prussian blue Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3

Physical Chemistry

Minor experiments                                                                                  40 Hrs

a) To determine the mutual solubility curve of phenol – water system and their consolute point.

b) To determine the transition temperature of given substance by thermometric method.

c) Determination of freezing point depression constant of camphor using Rast method.

d) Determine the lattice energy of calcium chloride from its heat of solution using Born-Haber cycle. You are provided the Enthalpy changes for Ca+2 (g) → Ca(g), 2Cl- (g) → 2Cl (g), Ca (g) → Ca (s), 2Cl (g) → Cl2  and Ca (s) + Cl (g) → CaCl2 (s) as -451.1, 174.3, -38.8, -58.0 and -190.0 Kcal/mole respectively.

 Major experiments

e)To study the effect of a solute (NaCl/succinic acid) on the critical solution temperature of two partially miscible liquids (e.g. phenol-water system) and to determine the concentration of that solute in the system

f)To study the absorption of acetic acid or oxalic acid from aqueous solution by activated charcoal or animal charcoal and examine the validity of Freundlich and Langmuirs adsorption isotherms.

g)To study the adsorption of a solute (Acetic acid) on a dispersed solid (activated charcoal).
