“A DFT level study of Mercapto Substituted 1,2, 4-triazoles”.

Project Status

Sanctioned in the Year- 2010

On going

Duration

 24 Months

Funding agency

UGC

Total cost

Rs.1,10,000

Summary of the Project:

In the project it is planned to study the existence of the tautomeric thiol -thione  equilibrium in the mercapto substituted triazoles by DFT theoretical calculations.

 Major Highlights:

Prototropic tautomerism in nitrogen containing heteroaromatic compounds has been an area of interest for experimental as well as theoretical investigations and it has been indicated that the equilibrium  depends on the substituents and the solvent.  One step intramolecular  thione-thiol tautomerism in 1,2,4-triazole-3-thione and its disubstituted derivatives has been investigated through the use of electronic structure methods. The structure and thermodynamic functions have been calculated with full geometry optimization by the DFT B3LYP method at 6-311++G** level using Guassian 03 software in gas phase. The transition states for the thione-thiol conversion were located and verified by the presence of imaginary vibrational frequencies. Intrinsic reaction coordinate calculations were done to verifiy the connection of the transition states with respective reactants and products. NBO calculations have been used to rationalize the influence of the presence of electron withdrawing or electron releasing substituent on the geometrical structure and charge distribution. Energies of activation and reaction in each case have been calculated in gas phase as well as solvent by carrying out the single point calculation of gas phase optimized geometry in the latter. Thione form has been found to be more stable than the thiol form by 13-15 kcal mol-1 in all cases. Presence of the electron withdrawing substituent decreases the energy barrier for the thione-thiol proton transfer. The results will be included in the Ph.D. work of the Student.
