Overview

The Department of Chemistry is one of the leading Departments in the Faculty of Sciences, offering the following programmes of study:

Ph.D.

M.Sc.

B.Sc. (Hons.)

B.Sc.

It has a rich tradition of imparting high-quality teaching and research in cutting-edge thrust areas of chemical and interdisciplinary science, providing intensive research training to students and research scholars. The Department has also taken the lead in introducing innovations in the curricula and pedagogy and has, accordingly, introduced a number of job-oriented courses in the programmes being offered - viz. nanotechnology, computational and green chemistry, among others - thereby preparing students for jobs in teaching, medical research, testing/ medical laboratories, pharmaceutical/ companies, etc. The pedagogy adopted to deliver such quality education includes seminars, workshops, expert talks, field visits, presentations, demonstrations, practicals, dissertation and projects, over and above the regular lectures. In terms of physical resources, the Department possesses good infrastructure to support a variety of teaching and research-based initiatives.

Research is a central component and is embedded in the curricula of different programmes on offer. The faculty members embrace the teacher-scholar model and are committed to advancing chemical and interdisciplinary sciences by engaging students in the research process.  Each faculty member is actively engaged in research and publishes regularly in quality journals. The Department also has one patent to its credit.

The Research areas range from traditional areas of chemistry (i.e. analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, physical and green chemistry) to interdisciplinary pursuits in materials chemistry, nanotechnology, medicinal chemistry and computational chemistry. Regular interface with eminent scientists and researchers from various universities and research institutes - both from within India and abroad - are regularly organised on some of the frontier areas of study and reserach. This is also for the purpose of fostering and encouraging collaborative and/ or interdisciplinary research in the thrust areas within chemical sciences.

In sum, the Department’s mission is to nurture a world-class quality teaching environment for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral research programmes and to empower the students to meet the challenges posed by the academia and the industry alike.
