Chemistry Laboratory III (Practical)
|
CO31: Calibrate and operate scientific instruments and perform experiments based on phase equilibria, pH, electrode potential and conductance. CO32: Identify organic compounds containing monofunctional group. CO33: Estimate the amount of amino acids and carbohydrates in samples. CO34: Record experimental data accurately with proper significant figure and analyze the results of such experiments. CO35: Compile and report the results efficiently, and develop communications skills. CO36: Contribute effectively in course-specific interaction. |
Approach in teaching: Laboratory instructions and demonstrations.
Learning activities for the students: Peer learning, hands-on-learning, interpretation of data, record writing and learning through virtual labs.
|
Conduction of experiments, lab records, viva voce and quiz.

Minor
Systematic Qualitative Organic Analysis of Organic Compounds possessing monofunctional groups (-COOH, alcoholic, phenolic, aldehydic, ketonic, amide, nitro, amines) and preparation of one derivative. Differentiation between reducing and nonreducing sugars.
Scheme of Examination
The duration of the examination will be 4 hrs.
The following exercise will be set in the examination -
Physical Chemistry Experiment 30 marks
Organic Chemistry Experiment 28 marks
Viva 12 marks
Total 70 marks
The exercise carries 28 marks, 4 marks shall be awarded for preparatory work, setting up of an apparatus, neat and methodical work. Either one major experiment or two minor experiments will be allotted to the candidates by lottery.
The distribution of marks will be as follows:
The permissible limit will be decided by the examiner as it varies with the nature of the experiment.
Organic Compound Detection-
This exercise carries 28 marks. The distribution of marks will be as follows.
Oral questions shall generally be asked over the work assigned to the candidate. The purpose is to find out as to what extent the candidate has understood the basic principles.
