Title of the lecture: “Peramivir An Idea to Drug”
The session started with the welcome of Dr. Pooran Chand. He detailed about the the Influenza virus. It is highly contagious acute respiratory infection. He throw a light on the evolution in Influenza therapy. Targets for drug design for influenza are Hemaggalitein, Neuraminidase, M2 Proteins and Endonucleus. He has worked on the drug “peramivir”, a Neuraminidase inhibitor. He acquainted the students about an anti viral drug developed by biocryst pharmaceuticals for the treatment of influenza, acting as a transition state analogue inhibitor for influenza neuraminidase, thereby preventing new viruses emerging from infected cells.
He discussed the synthesis and mechanism of the drug and its bioavailability. Peramivir is used to treat influenza in adults who have flu symptoms for up to 2 days. The medicine should be given within the first 2 days when flu symptoms start. He stated that it is usually given as a single dose. He also explained the side effects of Peramivir like confusion, hallucinations, unusual behavior or thoughts. Peramivir will not treat an infection caused by bacteria or fungus.
