Date:   27/9/2017

Venue: A.V hall

Speaker: Prof. S. D. Samant, Department of Chemistry, ICT, Mumbai

A guest lecture was organized by the Department of Chemistry, The IIS University on 27 September, 2017 with Prof. S. D. Samantas the Guest Speaker. The topic of discussion was Interplay of kinetic and thermodynamic controls in organic reactions.

Various issues related to chemical reaction like material used, stoichiometry, unit process, waste generated, hazards and risks associated, energy requirements were discussed. The concept of Energy used and cost was highlighted. A guiding principle of organic synthesis was analyzed which stated “Higher yield, more selectivity and lesser time”.

Reaction can be controlled kinetically or thermodynamically by playing with temperature and time. Hammond postulate of transition state resembles that state closer to it in free energy was the basis of explanation. Various reactions like E2 Elimination, Diels-Alder Reaction, Enolate formation, Ylide reaction, Micheal addition were described. Also the stability of ortho, para, meta products was explained.

The lecture was very informative and had a great practical approach. The lecture was of great benefit to the students and enriched them with the fundamentals of Organic Chemistry.

Timings: 10:30 am - 3:30p.m.

Number of Students: 20

The Department of Chemistry, IIS University organized the industrial visit to a carpet industry in Jaipur that is Bharat Industries, on 31st Oct 2017. The visit was supervised by Dr. Pratibha Mittal and Ms. TanujaKumari. There were 20 students of M.Sc. Semester III.

Dr. Alexander guided the students about the working and functioning of the industry. That was totally the handmade process. They also told about the different natural dyes they use for colours like Majeet for pink color, Dewara for cream color, Rave chilli for yellow, harrad for green and for black color they use Ratanjyot with FeSO4.

They also guided the students about the processing. Firstly, the yarn is collected & washed. Then 30-40% alum is added followed by the addition of different colours of yarn. This process occurs in boilers whose temperature should be 900 °C. Different dyes absorbed by different wool at different temperature.

The visit was followed by visit to another industry where the weaving and shearing of carpets are done by the local villagers or weavers. After that, the carpet is washed by bleaching powder for cleaning and H2SO4 is added followed by addition of NaOH for shinning and softness of carpet. The best thing about the industry is that they recycle the washing water again and again. The above visit provided an opportunity to students to upgrade and enhance their academic skills and their entrepreneurship.
